Pendimethalin stops weed seedlings right at germination. It blocks the process a sprouting seed needs to grow its first root and shoot, so treated seeds die underground before they ever break the surface. It won't touch weeds that have already emerged.

Instead it forms a treated barrier in the top five to seven centimetres of soil that germinating seeds have to push through. That barrier only works if it stays intact, so it needs either light mechanical incorporation or ten to fifteen millimetres of rain or irrigation within a few days of spraying. Left dry and un-incorporated on the surface too long, control drops off.

Recommended rate: 3.0–4.0 litres per hectare

Apply before or shortly after planting, and always before the crop or the weeds come up. This timing is the single most important decision with this product. Spray too late, once weeds have already emerged, and the application is wasted, since it has no effect on anything already growing.

Incorporate lightly, or make sure rain or irrigation follows within a few days, so the soil barrier actually forms. Because this is a soil-residual product with long persistence, check rotation restrictions before planting something else on the same ground later in the season, sensitive rotational crops can still be affected by what's left behind.

In hot conditions, pendimethalin can volatilise off the soil surface if it isn't incorporated, so spray in the cooler part of the day and incorporate promptly where the label allows. Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection when handling the concentrate.

Store in the original container, away from direct sunlight, children, food, and livestock.

Registered for use on labelled crops across East African markets, under the relevant national regulatory authority. Always read and follow the approved product label before use.
